Import your customers from Excel or CSV

Bring all your customers in at once from Excel or a CSV file: prepare the file, match the columns, avoid duplicates and respect permissions.

Updated

If your customers are already in Excel, a spreadsheet or another program, you don't need to type them one by one. You can import them in minutes.

Prepare your file

  1. In Excel or Google Sheets, keep one row per customer and a header row on top (first name, last name, mobile, email).
  2. Write mobile numbers with the country code, for example +1 and then the number.
  3. Delete empty and repeated rows.
  4. Save as CSV (File › Save as › CSV).

Only import people who gave you permission to contact them, or who are already your customers. Importing a purchased list can get you in trouble with your messages and with the platforms.

Import

  1. Click Contacts.
  2. Click Import Contacts.
  3. Choose your CSV file.
  4. On the columns screen, match each column to its field: "Mobile" to phone, "Email" to email, and so on. Leave unmatched anything you don't want to bring in.
  5. Turn on the option to avoid duplicates for people who already exist (matched by mobile or email).
  6. If you like, add a tag to everyone you import, such as imported-october, so you can find them later.
  7. Click Import.

After importing

  • Open 3 or 4 profiles at random to check the data landed in the right place.
  • New contacts do not get automatic marketing messages until they have given permission. See Tags: what your template's tags mean.

If something goes wrong

  • A mobile number looks wrong: it's missing the country code or has letters in it.
  • All the data ends up in one column: you saved with a different separator; save again as a plain CSV.
  • Duplicate profiles appeared: check that the avoid-duplicates option was on.
